Certified translation

CL logo.png

A certified translation, sometimes referred to as an 'official', a 'sworn/assermentée' translation, is a translation that has been certified - ie dated, stamped and signed - by the translator.

Official requirements vary from country to country, depending on that particular country’s system and often also differ between commissioning authorities (the organisations that the translations will be submitted to), e.g. consulates and embassies, government bodies, universities and professional bodies.

In the UK, commissioning authorities invariably only accept translations certified by qualified members of a translation association such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists or the Institute of Translation & Interpreting. This renders the translation 'official', in the sense that it confirms the translation has been done and certified by a qualified professional translator.*

*Please note that if you have any queries about the standards required for a translation you need, you should always ask the relevant commissioning authority.
